Review: Guacamelee!

Super Turbo Championship Edition

The Xbox One Games with Gold release this month is Guacamelee! Super Turbo Championship Edition, and it coincides with it’s initial release on both the Xbox One and Xbox 360. The game was originally released in April 2013 and is available now on most platforms. Seems like as good a time as any for a review.

I was very excited to finally sit down and play this game, not only because I’m a huge fan of platformers, but also because this game has local multiplayer and there is nothing that makes me happier than sitting down with a friend and punching evil in it’s stupid face together!

The gameplay is very smooth. It’s easy enough to handle but complex enough that you can pull off some of the most wild combos as you fight the legions of enemies that attack you. The world is filled with puzzles to solve, hidden areas to unlock, new techniques to learn and some fantastic classic platforming moments that will make you fall in love with Guacamelee! the second you start playing.

The game is visually stunning. The art style is bright and colorful and fits the gameplay and humor perfectly. And the Mariachi style soundtrack that acompanys the action works perfectly. The team at Drink Box have certainly outdone themselves with this one.

All in all I sat down to play for a few minutes and lost hours before I put my controller down. If you have an Xbox One and a Gold membership you have no excuse. Actually, even if you don’t you STILL have no excuse. Grab yourself a copy of this game immediately! You can thank me later.
