In yet another family friendly version of a very popular video game genre, Splatoon 2 brings a simple, childlike fun to arena shooters. Like the 2015 original before it, teams fight against each other using ‘Ink’ weapons to cover and control territory. But the most exciting addition to the sequel is the the single player story mode.
The story mode is relatively basic but the execution of the story is a lot of fun. The characters are playful and entertaining and it never feels like it is dragging.
The game is a lot of fun and there is something for everyone. The multiplayer battles scratch the shoot em up itch without any of the violence of other games and the story mode levels and boss fights are fun and challenging. There is so much to do and collect that you'll easily be able to lose hours in game.
Super colourful and vibrant! I've said it before and I'll say it again, Nintendo really know how to get the best out of their hardware. For a simple game it looks absolutely gorgeous.
The concept of this game is quite strong. It's something Nintendo does really well. Take something successful and make it as family friendly as possible without dumbing it down. There is still so much to challenge veteran gamers in Splatoon 2 without making the level of entry for young players impossible. It's a hard line to walk but Nintendo knock it out of the park.
Without a doubt this game is a home run!
A lot of new features and weapons have been added this time around. The addition of the Co-Op horde mode, Salmon Run, is easily a favourite. Although some of the new weapons, like the Splat Dualies, change the multiplayer quite dramatically.
As I've said before, this game is so easy to pick up and play. Nintendo have done a great job at making this accessible to everyone without sacrificing quality or challenge.
This is a game that will keep me coming back. Everything about it is fun, and with the single player mode being as entertaining as it is I find myself saying "Just one more level" a lot. But who needs sleep, right?
In conclusion I highly recommend you check this game out. The only real challenge you will have is with Nintendo's new online app. The chat features are flimsy at best and the overall system definitely needs some work, not to mention the battery drain from having your phone on constantly. But that shouldn't overshadow what is a fantastic game. Definitely worth checking out. Splatoon 2 is available on Nintendo Switch from 21 July.
